The disappearance of tenure was the "Behind the Headlines" feature of a recent PBS broadcast of To the Contrary with Bonnie Erbe. The news and commentary program focuses on social issues with a panel of noted women offering commentary on those issues. In this broadcast, AFT Washington President Sandra Schroeder and Bonnie Halloran, president of the Lecturers' Employee Organization at the University of Michigan, helped Erbe tell the background story of colleges' increasing reliance on and mistreatment of contingent faculty. The report ended with a description of how the AFT's FACE campaign is aimed at addressing the inequities that are the result.

First to respond to the report was U.S. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) who made the point that it was easier to be elected to Congress than it was to earn tenure, which she did at Georgetown University Law School before running for office. Clearly her experience helped her to recognize that this is an issue of investment, noting that Congress is asking where the money is going as college costs rise.
