Statement by Randi Weingarten,
President, American Federation of Teachers,
On Tenure Policy Decision by the
Kentucky Community and Technical College System Board of Regents

In March 2009, the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) Board of Regents voted to end faculty tenure in the system. Today, the board has reversed that decision.

WASHINGTON
-Students and faculty alike will benefit from the Kentucky Community and Technical College System Board of Regents' decision to restore faculty tenure. This decision will ensure that professors have the job security and academic freedom necessary to address challenging subjects and maintain the high standards that are essential for student success. This is a big win for college students in Kentucky and a big win for fairness for faculty. It's unfortunate that this decision required a legal analysis by the Kentucky attorney general to prompt the board's action. However, that opinion, and the herculean efforts of union members, made all the difference in ensuring that the KCTCS will have a strong corps of full-time faculty to educate the students of Kentucky.
